Head Veterinary Technician II
Steve originally hails from frosty Edmonton, Alberta where he grew up wandering the wilds and cities of his home province. His mother would tell you he was destined to work closely with animals as he grew up rescuing and caring for the wild (and not so wild) furred, feathered and scaled. Moving to Toronto at the age of 18 was an opportunity to follow the path he had always wanted. Weighing a desire to be a Veterinarian versus a Technician, he decided the more hands-on work of the technician was more what he wanted.
His 30-year career has taken him from Toronto to Ottawa and then back to his home province in Calgary with a multiple focus on emergency medicine, critical care and exotic medicine, while adding training in occupational health and safety and growing his skills in staff management. His dream of moving to the west coast came to fruition when he moved to Vancouver Island, which gave him more opportunity to build his management skills with a focus on clinic management. Island life proved a bit too slow and a move to Vancouver came in 2016. He had a short stint working in the pet health insurance industry but his real love was clinic medicine, which brought him to Mountainside in 2019.
Off hours consists of time spent outdoors; hiking, biking, building stuff (with wood and LEGO) and camping, along with singing for the Vancouver Men’s Chorus and playing Santa during the Christmas season, and of course, spending time with his two husbands keeping out of trouble (for the most part!).
