14 Sep Dangers of Salt Water Poisoning in Dogs
We recently shared some of the things to be aware of when letting your dog enjoy swimming in a lake.
As the dog days of summer draw to a close, we give you some precautions with seawater.
In most cases, a few mouthfuls of salt water may only cause diarrhea.
Consuming large amounts of salt water, however, can be fatal.
When a dog ingests salt water, the excess salt draws water from the blood into the intestines, leading to diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration.
One way to keep your dog safe at the beach is to ensure they have access to fresh water.
If your dog drinks seawater and exhibits any of the above symptoms, or their behaviour just doesn’t seem right after being in the ocean, immediately call your veterinarian or Mountainside for advice.
Please share this information with other dog owners whose dogs may enjoy playing and swimming in the ocean.
